Celebrate Summer with the Classic Sound of Rock and Roll
The award winning rock band, Awesome Express, will be performing in their own outdoor concert at Wellesley Town Hall Green on Tuesday, June 19th from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. It is free and open to all ages. A Hot Dog cart and an Ice Cream truck will be on site — all you need is a chair or blanket. This concert is sponsored by the Wellesley Recreation Department and the Boston Athletic Association. The rain date is June 20th.
Influenced by Led Zepplin, Styx, the Beatles & AC/DC, Awesome Express is a dynamic group of 4 high school students, ages 15-17, with high energy and outstanding musicianship who perform original music and covers. The members of Awesome Express include Charles Coleman (Wellesley), Charles Winston (Needham), Kyle Coulter (Needham), and Shaqed Druyan (West Roxbury). The band came together in late 2009, through the local non-profit teen band program, Plugged In, which places teens together for 10 weeks to make music and use their music to help others. After playing together for a very short time, they realized that they had something special. Awesome Express entered a battle of the bands and won.
In addition to performing at top venues in the Metrowest and Boston areas, Awesome Express has been prevailing in band battles ever since. In the last few months, the band was “Runner-up Best Band” at the Limelight Music awards, and was awarded finalist status in the following competitions: the South Shore Teen Talent Competition, the NEGB1 Battle of the Bands, “In the Groove Battle” (semi-finals took place in NYC, Philly, DC and Boston) and the Grand Finale Music On & Up showcase. They were the 2011 winner of the Berklee High School Battle of the Bands. Awesome Express is now selling their first Ep/Cd. Recently, Awesome Express performed at the wonderful Slate Club in New York City. They will be performing at Café 939 in Boston on June 28th.
