Members of the Bates Elementary School 5th Grade Student Council focused their April efforts on helping local families fight breast cancer. On two consecutive Thursday afternoons, the group hosted fundraisers to benefit the Ellie Fund.
The Bates Student Council is made up of a rotating group of students from the 5th grade class. Each student has the opportunity to sit on a six week session and is asked to collaborate with peers on a project that will help the community. Student Council members Will McGraw and Matthew Nadeau share that they chose the Ellie Fund because “[they] thought it would be a good idea to support families who have been affected by breast cancer because it gives them support and helps them through tough times.”
The Ellie Fund is a Needham-based non profit organization that provides critical support services including transportation to medical appointments, childcare, housekeeping, groceries and prepared meals free of charge to patients and families across the state of Massachusetts.
Through a pink-themed bake sale and after school dodge ball tournament, the group raised over $800 which can be used to provide 32 rides to medical appointments, 32 prepared and delivered meals, 24 house keeping sessions or 4 weeks of childcare to a local family fighting breast cancer.
