Nearly 150 people filled the gracious residence built by Dr. Frederic Stanwood in 1916, at 323 Washington Street (adjacent to the Cliff Road ramp next to the Hills post office), to commemorate the re-birth of the still-dignified yet formerly weary and threadbare building. But it was in fact a double celebration, because this night the guests had also come to launch the re-imagining of the Wellesley Historical Society. It had taken 13 years, $2.7 million, and six Society presidents to transform the doctor’s neglected home/office into the enticingly envisioned Wellesley History and Exhibit Center. While paying respectful honor to the treasures of the town’s past, the building is also designed to be, in the present, the shared community hub for the story of our town, and to play a leadership role in the community’s future life as Wellesley’s townwide cultural center. Learn more about the transformation, and the 13-year-long process, in the Digital Edition of the Spring 2026 Issue of WellesleyWeston Magazine.
