As a children’s librarian at the Wellesley Free Library, Eva Thaler-Sroussi’s life’s work is
devoted to children, books, and community.
As one of just 15 members of the 2021 John Newbery Award Selection Committee, she had the incredible privilege—and challenge—of choosing “the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children” by reading hundreds and hundreds of books and, with the committee, selecting one to receive the coveted gold seal that denotes the John Newbery Award. Her committee also chose honor winners, designated by a silver seal. Deliberating during the pandemic made this unique experience even more challenging, yet the goal was the same: to recognize timeless books worth reading again and again.
“It was an amazing experience,” Thaler-Sroussi said. “We felt great to lift up these beautiful books. Kids will be reading them for generations.”
