Spring 2006 Publisher’s Letter

new englanders love to cheerfully complain about the weather, especially in the winter.

At dinner parties and in checkout lines, the conversation inevitably becomes focused on the amount of snowfall, the frigid temperatures, and anticipated school closings. When winter cuts short our days and a blanket of darkness comes early, we crave light, and sometimes find it hard to remain optimistic.

I am certainly ready for sunnier days and balmier air.Yet I must admit that the gentle snow that is currently blanketing the coating of ice on the ground as I write this is actually quite lovely. Spring, however, is definitely worth the wait, and the first crocus peeking through the melting snow is always a heartwarming sight. Perhaps it is the length and severity of our winters that give us such cause to celebrate spring when it finally arrives.

Celebrations play a major role in this Spring issue, beginning with Wellesley’s 125th anniversary to take place on April 6th. In “Happy Birthday,Wellesley,” we celebrate our town’s past and contemplate its future. For a more intimate celebration, we have created a delightful wine dinner featuring a menu that honors each of the four seasons.

The new life that spring promises reminds us that now is a good time to think about tending our gardens, and our “Green Scene” article provides some advice on where to start. I hope you’ll enjoy discovering the many gardens that are practically in our backyard at Elm Bank, home to the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. This is also the perfect season to think about rejuvenation and remodeling for your home. Our “Ten Tips”will get you started on spring cleaning with helpful suggestions to get your closets in order and cleared of clutter. On a larger scale, we visit three local kitchens and find out what Wellesley and Weston homeowners are doing to create dream kitchens that reflect their own unique lifestyles. And we all know how winter can take its toll on skin. Our local skin care experts provide useful advice on how to repair dry, flaky skin and restore a fresh, healthy glow.

If the prospect of spring isn’t enough to brighten your spirits, perhaps the opportunity to win a free trip to Bermuda will. In celebration of WellesleyWeston Magazine’s first year of publication, we are giving away a four-night stay for two at Cambridge Beaches, one of Bermuda’s premier resorts. You can learn more about Cambridge Beaches and Bermuda in this month’s “Excursions” article. To find out how you can win the trip, log on to our website at www.wellesleywestonmagazine.com. And while you’re on our website, feel free to email our editor, Jill Nilsen, with your comments and ideas as to how we can continue to provide you with interesting, informative and newsworthy articles.

Thank you for your continued support and interest in our magazine. I wish all of you beautiful weather in which to celebrate the bountiful pleasures of springtime renewal.

Sincerely,
Beth Furman
