Wellesley’s two new grade schools are designed to unleash creativity
of both students and teachers. In spring 2024, a new Hunnewell Elementary School will open to succeed its 85-year-old predecessor, followed within a year by a new Hardy Elementary School replacing a century-old building.
Noting the unusual timing of building two schools at once, Superintendent David F. Lussier says, “It was a once-in-a-generation chance to think about all the activities that happen in a school and then think about the kind of structure that would give us maximum flexibility.”
Teachers, administrators, town officials, parents, and others in the community brainstormed for years, arriving at an overarching vision “of keeping the neighborhood feel of the schools alive within the schools themselves,” Hunnewell principal Ellen Quirk says.
