Celebrating Chinese New Year: Lion Dance and Kung Fu Demonstration in the Wakelin Room.

The Lion, a symbol of power, wisdom, and good fortune, chases away evil spirits and brings happiness, longevity, and good luck. The Lion Dance simulates the movement of a lion and uses the footwork, body movements, balance, and agility that are used in Kung Fu. It is usually accompanied by a musical ensemble consisting of a large Chinese drum (da shih gu) played with two wooden mallets, a gong (luo), and one or more sets of cymbals (bo). Often there are comic figures to tease the lion and interact with the audience. The Lion Dance, which may be performed on occasions such as weddings, store openings, and at various festivals and celebrations, has been a part of Chinese culture for thousands of years.
