CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS: Local Students to Compete in the First Annual Massachusetts Financial Regatta

A diverse selection of high school students from a variety of economic and geographic areas will compete in the Massachusetts Financial Regatta, a real life sailing and financial literacy learning competition being held on June 1, 2013 from 9:30 am – 2 pm at Community Boating Incorporated in Boston.

Registration is still open for student competitors, online deadline is May 26th.

WHY would a student register?

On the day of the Massachusetts Financial Regatta there will be twelve sailing teams, each made up of four high school students, a financial educator, and an experienced sailing captain. Half of the teams will start the day on land, learning from a financial literacy educator.  The other half will sail with an experienced sailor who will be educated in personal finance prior to the event.  After each team has sailed and been educated, a complimentary healthy lunch will be provided by Life Alive and Dorados Tacos.

After lunch, students will take an original, nautically themed, financial fluency test, which will assess their knowledge on topics such as budgeting, credit, student loan calculations, insurance and taxes. Points will be awarded to teams that answer the most questions correctly.  The six teams with the highest scores will compete in the sailing regatta.

Wrapping the day up at 1:45PM, the winning teams will be awarded more than $1,000 in cash and prizes. Complementary educational materials for every student will be provided by The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and The Massachusetts Jump$tart Coalition.

Real life financial responsibilities are not mandatorily included in Massachusetts’ educational system. Young adults are not given the tools and knowledge needed to set themselves up for a financially successful adulthood. The Financial Regatta will demonstrate the importance of personal finance in a fun and educational way, promoting adolescent financial empowerment.  This event will increase awareness on this important topic by bringing the community together, pioneering the way to early financial literacy education throughout multiple ages, incomes, and ethnic backgrounds.
