Wellesley — an EPA Green Power Community–Aims to Further Lower Energy Use and Costs in Town

Following the success of the POWER to CHOOSE renewable energy campaign, Wellesley’s Sustainable Energy Committee, the Wellesley Municipal Light Plant and National Grid are launching the POWER to $AVE Energy Savings Program. This initiative encourages residents to get a no-cost home energy assessment that can help residents save money and energy by improving their homes’ energy performance. The goal of the POWER to $AVE campaign is to recruit at least 400 Wellesley homeowners to take advantage of a home energy assessment.  A home energy assessment evaluates a home’s energy usage and provides recommendations for numerous ways to improve its efficiency, resulting in reduced energy usage and expense.

“Each of us has the power to save money AND do something to save the planet at the same time,” enthusiastically announced Ellen Korpi, Chair, Town of Wellesley, Sustainable Energy Committee.  “Given how easy it is to access this home energy assessment, we hope to see an outpouring of support from our neighbors, who last year stepped up to earn us Green Power Community status,” Korpi said.

Richard F. Joyce, Director of the Wellesley Municipal Light Plant said, “This program provides a way to save on energy bills, receive no-cost equipment and potentially have access to very attractive incentives and rebates.”

The program includes:
·      a no-cost, customized home energy assessment including recommended actions and payback estimates
·      Scheduling at your convenience with extended hours available
·      List of participating weatherization contractors available
·      Rebates, incentives, no cost equipment and tax credits may be available

In addition, POWER to $AVE supports our local economy through the employment of local participating weatherization contractors.

The Committee was created by Town Meeting to coordinate initiatives and monitor progress towards the Town Meeting goal of reducing the Town of Wellesley’s carbon footprint by 10% between 2007 and 2013 and the Board of Selectmen’s leadership goal of a 20% reduction of the municipal carbon footprint during that period.  It consists of representatives of the Board of Selectmen, School Committee and Wellesley Municipal Light Plant as well as four people appointed by the Selectmen.
