37th Annual Seminar on Contemporary Music for the Young
April 10-12, 2015, Weston, Massachusetts

For 37 years The Rivers School Conservatory has been home to a truly unique festival sparking the imaginations of composers and educators worldwide. Each year, RSC presents a three-day festival of student and faculty recitals, composition workshops, guest composer meet-and-greet and discussions, all focused on contemporary music. The catch is this: all music performed in the festival must be composed within the last 25 years and never have been performed in the seminar before; students and audience members play, hear, and learn the music of their time.

37th Seminar by the Numbers
This year’s festival features 142 student performers, 102 compositions, 82 composers, 19 world premieres, and 4 new works commissioned specifically for the seminar. Over its 37 year history the seminar has presented more than 1,600 composers, 600 premieres, and 160 commissioned works.

Featured Composer, Lisa Bielawa
This year the commissioned composer is Lisa Bielawa, who is no stranger to Boston, having been composer-in-residence for the Boston Modern Orchestra Project; she also won the Prix de Rome and had her music performed throughout the US and Europe. The seminar features five of her works including the world premiere of “Hypermelodia,” composed specifically for current students at The Rivers School Conservatory.

“Hypermelodia” features three ensembles: a chamber orchestra, big band, and jazz trio. Much like hyperlinks (an internet link on a website), “Hypermelodia” provides the jazz trio with numerous options (e.g. links) that lead to nine other musical ideas played by the orchestra or big band. No two performances can, or should, ever be alike.
