The Boston University Art Gallery (BUAG) is pleased to present The Shape of Abstraction, guest curated by Boston-based independent curator Rachael Arauz, Ph.D. The Shape of Abstraction features work by twenty-four historic and contemporary artists who have expanded the visual inventory of abstract art by focusing on shapes. Gallery Director Marc Mitchell says, “This thematic exhibition was an opportunity not only to gather an impressive group of world-renowned artists, but also a chance to showcase the essential, yet powerful effect of shapes in modern art at a time when many young artists have indicated a renewed interest in abstraction.” From Josef Albers to Thomas Nozkowski, the artists in this show focus on simple forms—both hard-edge volumes and free-form masses—invested with infinite associative possibilities. The Shape of Abstraction includes both classic and unexpected groupings of paintings, drawings, collage, and sculpture, and will offer a small, but stunning version of the history of abstract art and its ongoing tradition.
Dedicated to serving the public of New England as well as the university community, Boston University Art Gallery (BUAG) is a non-profit art gallery geared toward an interdisciplinary interpretation of art and culture. Maintaining an ongoing exhibition schedule in its current location since 1958, now named the Stone Gallery, exhibitions focus on international, national, and regional art developments, chiefly in the twentieth century. BUAG has a particular commitment to offer a culturally inclusive view of art, one that expands the boundaries of museum exhibitions.
BUAG is located at 855 Commonwealth Avenue, at the Stone Gallery inside the College of Fine Arts building on the Boston University campus (BU West T stop on the “B” Green Line).
