Wellesley’s Largest Conserved Green Space Hides a Rich and Storied Past. The Guernsey Sanctuary is a 25-acre parcel of protected land located on the Wellesley/Needham border. It was one of the first tracts gifted to the Wellesley Conservation Land Trust (WCLT) by Janet and William Guernsey in 1961, and is the largest. … When Alisa Fine joined the board of WCLT, the Sanctuary caught her eye as a place where she could bring her deep interest in “using different disciplines to better understand all the forces and people and things that happen in one specific spot over time.” She received a grant from the Community Fund for Wellesley on behalf of WCLT to assemble a panel of experts for a talk entitled “Storyscapes of Guernsey Sanctuary.” The talk was presented September 2025 at the Wellesley Public Library, with over 75 attendees. “What fascinates me is that we think landscapes are ‘natural’ and have been around forever, and they never change,” she shared. “But the fact is that New England landscapes grew alongside humans and are incredibly dynamic.”
