Hollister Gallery at Babson College presents “Kiyomizu: Rubbings and Other Work” by Thomas Matsuda on display from January 28th through March 14th.
The word Kiyomizu means pure water. Fire, water, earth, air, and space are the five elements often expressed in Japanese culture. The use of these elements stems from Buddhist beliefs and the classical Chinese five elements which include wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. his traditional Buddhist stone carvings and in his outdoor sculpture installations and drawings in a synthesis of contemporary western and eastern approaches. His large charred wood carvings and earth works have a raw totemic presence suggesting life, death, and re-birth as well as the burning away of illusion and desire. The burnt wood and earth also serve as reminders of deforestation and its environmental impact. Matsuda’s rubbings ─ made with charred wood on handmade paper─ are tactile meditations on the life of a tree.
Thomas Matsuda currently resides and works in Conway, Massachusetts. He lived in Japan for 12 years and apprenticed with the Traditional Carver, Koukei Eri and carved over two hundred sculptures for various temples, shrines, villages, businesses, and patrons. He received his MFA in Sculpture from UMASS Amherst and currently teaches at Wachusett Community College. He has exhibited Internationally and throughout America with residencies at the Pedvale Open Art Museum in Pedvale, Latvia, the Sculpture Trail in West Yorkshire England, and the Franconia Sculpture Park in Franconia , NY to name but a few.
